Choosing a training route is a significant decision, and many of the questions Oracle is asked come from parents and guardians weighing up whether hair and beauty is the right path for a young person. The answers below cover what the industry is really like, how full-time training and apprenticeships differ, what support is in place along the way, and how to take the next step. Is hair and beauty a good career option?
The industry is a multi-billion pound sector with many different career pathways. It can involve long hours and weekend work, but it also offers creativity, progression and a wide range of opportunities.
What career pathways are available?
Progression routes include salons, spas, cruise ships, product companies, retail, theatre, TV, higher education, management, teaching and product development.
What are the upsides and challenges?
Hair and beauty is constantly evolving and highly creative, but it is also competitive and demanding. Motivation, resilience and genuine interest in people matter.
What programmes does Oracle run?
Provision covers full-time study programmes, employer-backed apprenticeships and qualifications funded through the Advanced Learner Loan, across hairdressing, barbering, beauty, nails and make-up. Shorter standalone courses are also available to book directly through this site for anyone wanting to add a single skill rather than commit to a full programme.
Where does training take place?
Oracle has two training centres: Doncaster, at 65-67 Silver Street, DN1 1JL, and Rotherham, at 14 Effingham Street, S65 1AJ. Doncaster is the main office, and visitors are welcome at either site during weekday opening hours.
How do apprenticeships differ from full-time training?
An apprentice is employed and earns while they learn, splitting time between working in a salon or business and off-the-job training with Oracle. A full-time programme is based primarily at a training centre, with work experience arranged alongside it. More than 150 local employers work with Oracle, which is how most placements and apprenticeship vacancies come about.
Will my child still study maths and English?
Where they are required, maths and English are treated as an integral part of the learner experience rather than an add-on, and are built into the programme alongside practical training.
Is there help choosing the right course?
Yes. Oracle's recruitment team guides learners through course selection, entry requirements and next steps, so nobody has to work out the right pathway on their own. It is worth making contact before applying if there is any uncertainty about which route fits best.
How is the quality of training assured?
Oracle was rated Good by Ofsted at its 2023 inspection, holds the matrix quality standard for information, advice and guidance services, and is an approved provider for Education and Skills Funding Agency funded training.
